The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a black box warning last week on Viagra and Cialis that could harm an unborn baby.
The FDA said the agency has issued a black box warning for Cialis and Viagra but the FDA has not yet issued an updated warning to consumers about the potential dangers of these drugs.
The FDA says it can only recall and approve these drugs after more than a year of testing.
In its latest warning, the FDA said in an online filing:
While consumers can read and understand the FDA’s revised label and instruction sheets, the FDA has not released a black box warning on Cialis and Viagra. Rather, FDA’s updated warning label and instruction sheets and the FDA’s online information sheet will be updated to reflect the latest safety information.
“FDA is not aware of any evidence that these drugs have any potential harm, and the FDA continues to review and update the FDA label and instructions to reflect that risk,” said Dr. Scott O’Connor, the FDA’s deputy director of safety.
“While it is possible that Cialis and Viagra could have adverse effects on an unborn baby, the safety and efficacy of these drugs remain unknown.”
“We remain committed to protecting the health and safety of all Americans, and we urge all consumers to take the first steps to do so by choosing to purchase, and continue to buy, the FDA’s updated and independent product safety alert,” added Dr. Daniel Williams, the FDA’s head of product safety, safety, and quality.
Consumers who have purchased or may have purchased the drugs are advised that use of the product is not recommended.
The FDA has not yet issued a black box warning on Cialis or Viagra, and the agency does not plan to release a black box warning on these drugs until at least June 2019.

A Spanish man who sold erectile dysfunction pills at a Spanish pharmacy has been jailed for eight months.
Benoamos San Marino, 42, who was arrested in Spain, pleaded guilty to charges of illegally dispensing and illegally selling unlicensed Viagra.
He was sentenced to eight months in jail and the maximum fine of €1.5 million.
The court heard that San Marino had been employed by the online drug trade in Spain and was also the owner of the pharmacy in the city.
